Brighton & Hove Albion needed fewer than ten minutes to turn a bitter rivalry into a rout. Their 5–0 demolition of Crystal Palace at the Amex on Sunday, 18 October, featured a spectacular Diego Gómez goal from around halfway and strengthened an increasingly persuasive challenge for Champions League football.

Elsewhere in the Premier League weekend roundup, Manchester City maintained their perfect start, Arsenal found a late winner at Nottingham Forest and Liverpool recovered at Brentford. Manchester United dropped more points, but Brighton supplied the performance that demanded attention on Monday morning.

Brighton 5–0 Crystal Palace decided in ten minutes

Fresh from last weekend’s 2–0 win at Sunderland, Brighton dismantled Palace with an opening that mixed set-piece threat, outrageous ambition and slick combination play. Jaydee Canvot headed Pascal Groß’s free-kick into his own net in the fourth minute. Palace barely had time to regroup.

Gómez made it two in the seventh minute, spotting Walter Benítez off his line and launching a shot from just inside Palace’s half. Opta measured the strike at 51.3 metres, the longest-range Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney’s effort against West Ham in November 2017. Its execution made it an outstanding early contender for goal of the season.

Charalampos Kostoulas then supplied Yasin Ayari for the third. Only nine minutes and 30 seconds had elapsed, making Brighton the first Premier League side to score three inside ten minutes since Newcastle overwhelmed Tottenham in April 2023.

Kostoulas scored the fourth in the 49th minute and substitute Jack Hinshelwood added the fifth in the 84th. An academy graduate finishing the scoring against Palace gave the home crowd another reason to savour a result Brighton last achieved against these rivals in January 1956.

Hürzeler’s side have substance behind the scoreline

Brighton’s official match report describes their control of midfield. Groß, Ayari and Gómez combined pressure on the ball with movement into space, leaving Palace responding to Brighton’s decisions throughout the afternoon.

Fabian Hürzeler has threats across the team. Gómez became Brighton’s 11th different league scorer, while Kostoulas has three goals and two assists. That spread of contributions forces opponents to guard several routes to goal.

Brighton have scored 23 goals in seven league matches. Only three teams in Premier League history have bettered that total across their first seven games. Their last four league victories have produced an aggregate score of 15–0, evidence that the derby win belongs to a sustained run.

Four consecutive league clean sheets have left Brighton with five goals conceded, joint-fewest alongside Arsenal after Sunday. Hürzeler’s team are winning emphatically while limiting opponents’ returns, an encouraging combination for their Champions League ambitions.

Brighton finished Sunday third on 16 points from seven games, behind Arsenal on 18 and City on 21. Their spell in second lasted until Arsenal’s later win at Forest.

Palace are 14th on seven points. Canvot’s own goal, Benítez’s positioning and the space Ayari found raise questions about defensive organisation. Their 17 goals conceded are their worst return at this stage of a league campaign since 1980/81, according to Opta.

Liverpool await after Brighton’s European trip

Brighton visit Jablonec in the Conference League on Thursday before Liverpool away on Sunday, 25 October, at 16:00 SAST. Trips to City follow in the Carabao Cup on 28 October and the league on 31 October, testing their confidence and depth.

Liverpool’s latest official availability update adds significance to the Anfield meeting. Andoni Iraola confirmed Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong face time out after both were forced off at Brentford. Szoboszlai aggravated his previous problem; Frimpong’s injury was new. Ryan Gravenberch has served his league suspension and is eligible to return against Brighton.

Brighton’s team-goals markets merit attention against a Liverpool side adjusting its options. Thursday’s workload and the final selections will help determine how much of Sunday’s attacking threat they can carry into Anfield.

City stay perfect as Arsenal keep pace

City beat Ipswich Town 3–2 on Saturday through Phil Foden and two Erling Haaland goals. Daizen Maeda’s equaliser and Zian Flemming’s late penalty made it uncomfortable, but Enzo Maresca became the first manager to win his first seven Premier League matches in charge of a club.

City have scored 19 league goals and conceded seven. The winning run keeps them setting the pace, although Ipswich’s two goals show why assessing City to win and assessing a City clean sheet are separate decisions. Their attacking strength can rescue results when the defence is breached.

Arsenal kept the gap at three points by beating Nottingham Forest 1–0 on Sunday. Substitute Noni Madueke’s deflected 80th-minute winner was their only shot on target. Six victories from seven underline their consistency, although this was a result secured by persistence and squad depth rather than a commanding attacking display.

Arsenal have also kept clean sheets in three of their four league away games, giving their title challenge a defensive foundation that travelling supporters can recognise.

Isak delivers as United lose another lead

Liverpool climbed to fifth on 12 points with a 2–1 win at Brentford. Victor Muñoz cancelled out Keane Lewis-Potter’s opener before the returning Alexander Isak struck the winner. Brentford lost Yehor Yarmoliuk to a red card before half-time and Vitaly Janelt in stoppage time, context that belongs alongside Liverpool’s comeback.

United drew 1–1 at Leeds after Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s opener. Mbeumo’s fourth league goal offers an individual positive, but United again failed to protect an advantage. Michael Carrick’s team are 13th on seven points, with one league win and none in their last five matches. Following the tensions around United’s recruitment, another dropped lead leaves the pressure on their performances intact.

Chelsea climb as Villa and two strugglers win

Pedro Neto scored twice as Chelsea won 2–0 at Everton to reach fourth on 13 points, earning their first league clean sheet since January. The win came at a cost: Chelsea’s injury update confirms goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez underwent surgery for a fractured jaw suffered in a collision. They have not announced a return date.

Aston Villa won 1–0 at Newcastle through Johan Manzambi’s first-half header, moving to 12th on eight points. Fulham beat Hull City 1–0 through Alex Iwobi for their first league victory, lifting them to 17th. Bournemouth also earned their first league win, beating Sunderland 2–0 through Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson to move 15th.

Tottenham host Coventry on Monday, 19 October, at 21:00 SAST. That fixture remains outstanding and is excluded from the completed weekend results.

The Betting Read

We would assess Brighton’s team-goals line before asking them to win at Anfield. City’s seven league wins strengthen their title case, but seven goals conceded keep opposition scoring markets relevant. Arsenal’s consistency supports their challenge; United’s current results give little reason to pay a premium for their reputation.

Our sports betting guide explains how to compare prices and implied probability. For Brighton, Sunday’s statement is clear: they have earned serious consideration among the Champions League contenders. The next step is to see how their scoring and defensive control hold up through Europe, Anfield and two visits to the Etihad.
