Pirates Take CAF Advantage as Chiefs Lose and Sundowns Are Held in Angola
Three away trips have produced three different qualification tasks for South Africa’s biggest clubs. With away goals still in play, Friday’s return legs demand careful attention to the score required and the market you’re backing.

Orlando Pirates brought home the strongest result of South Africa’s CAF weekend, beating African Stars 1–0 while Kaizer Chiefs lost by the same score against Red Arrows. Mamelodi Sundowns completed the contrasting picture with a goalless draw away to Wiliete in Angola.
The first legs on 17–18 October leave all three group-stage bids alive. Pirates have a lead to protect, Chiefs must recover a deficit and Sundowns face a tie in which conceding at home could sharply change the calculation.
Moremi gives Pirates control of their tie
Our CAF weekend preview assessed three away assignments. Saturday’s results have given Pirates the greatest freedom: Tshepang Moremi’s late winner against Namibia’s African Stars at Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone established a 1–0 Champions League advantage.
Pirates’ official match report records several opportunities for Yanela Mbuthuma, while Gamphani Lungu threatened with headers. Sipho Chaine also had work to do, and the visitors protected their lead when Stars pushed back after Moremi scored.
Abdeslam Ouaddou can now prioritise controlling space and choosing when to attack. Stars must score, which could eventually create counter-attacking openings. That supports Pirates’ qualification case more directly than a demand for a large second-leg winning margin: a draw would complete the job.
Chiefs need more chances and stronger set-piece defence
Alassane Diarra’s late header from an Ackim Mumba corner gave Red Arrows a 1–0 Confederation Cup victory at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday. Chiefs now have to break down a side that can protect its lead and threaten from dead balls.
iDiski Times’ match report records Chiefs’ first shot on target after 53 minutes. Luke Baartman made way for Flavio Da Silva at half-time, while Thabiso Monyane had already gone off injured. His availability for Friday needs an update rather than an assumption.
Returning to Durban gives Fernando Da Cruz’s side home support, but the first-leg evidence calls for better chance creation. Chiefs also need to protect themselves while attacking: an Arrows goal would leave them needing at least three to qualify outright. A home-win bet and a Chiefs-to-qualify bet therefore ask different things.
Sundowns leave Angola with work and an injury concern
Sunday’s 0–0 at Estádio Nacional da Tundavala in Lubango leaves Sundowns’ Champions League tie level. CAF described a contest with few scoring opportunities. Brayan León did have an early effort cleared off the line, while Ricardo Goss later denied Mabululu.
The defending champions failed to turn their openings into an away goal. Their established attacking options make a home victory a reasonable starting position, but Wiliete’s resistance offers little support for treating a big handicap as straightforward.
Teboho Mokoena went off injured before half-time, with Bathusi Aubaas replacing him. That is a selection concern ahead of Friday, without confirming a diagnosis or absence. Sundowns’ midfield balance and ability to sustain pressure deserve another assessment once his condition is clarified.
Friday’s return fixtures and qualification requirements
All three return legs are scheduled for Friday, 23 October. These are the listed South African start times, with Sundowns’ official fixture page specifying 20:00 at Loftus.
| Home team | Aggregate* | SAST | Venue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kaizer Chiefs | 0–1 | 18:00 | Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban |
| Orlando Pirates | 1–0 | 19:30 | Orlando Amstel Arena, Soweto |
| Mamelodi Sundowns | 0–0 | 20:00 | Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria |
*Aggregate scores show the South African club first.
CAF’s published Champions League and Confederation Cup regulations, clauses 12–14, apply aggregate goals, then away goals. If both remain equal after the second leg’s 90 minutes, the tie goes directly to penalties. There’s no extra time in this round.
Pirates qualify with any win or draw. A 0–1 defeat means penalties; any other defeat eliminates them. For example, losing 1–2 would level the aggregate at 2–2, but Stars would have two away goals to Pirates’ one.
Chiefs qualify outright with a win by at least two goals. A 1–0 victory means penalties. Every other one-goal win, including 2–1, eliminates them on away goals; a draw or defeat also puts them out.
Sundowns qualify with any win. Another 0–0 means penalties, while any scoring draw sends Wiliete through on away goals. A defeat eliminates Sundowns.
The Betting Read
Pirates to qualify is our clearest progression preference, subject to price. Their lead allows a draw, making a goals-heavy combination less necessary. Sundowns to win over 90 minutes is the more direct angle in Pretoria, with their attacking selection important before considering a handicap.
Chiefs’ attacking need could open the game, but need alone doesn’t justify over 2.5 goals or both teams to score. Their limited first-leg output warrants more evidence before backing either.
