South Africa’s CAF weekend puts Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns on the road with group-stage places at stake. Pirates face African Stars on Saturday, when Chiefs meet Red Arrows, before Sundowns take on Wiliete on Sunday.

All three ties begin at 0–0, with the return matches scheduled for Friday, 23 October. There’s an opportunity to bring control home, but backing three familiar names to win away would overlook the different challenges awaiting them.

One round from the group stage

Our recent Betway Premiership title-race coverage followed the domestic pressure on these clubs. Continental football now changes the calculation: a useful first-leg result can leave room to finish the job in South Africa.

CAF confirms that Pirates and Sundowns are in the Champions League’s second preliminary round, the final hurdle before the groups. Chiefs enter at the equivalent stage of the Confederation Cup. These are two-legged qualification ties, so Saturday’s or Sunday’s result settles only the opening match.

African Stars vs Orlando Pirates

Saturday, 17 October, 15:00 SAST. Botswana National Stadium, Gaborone. The hosts’ ticketing listing confirms the start, while Pirates’ fixture schedule confirms the venue. African Stars are Namibian, but this leg takes place in Botswana, an important detail when weighing home advantage.

Pirates responded to their 2–0 MTN8 final defeat by beating TS Galaxy 3–0 on Tuesday. Their seventh league victory brought a sixth league clean sheet. Radiopane, Moremi and Masilela supplied the goals, giving Abdeslam Ouaddou several attacking contributions to build on.

Oswin Appollis remains a fitness question after his precautionary withdrawal against Galaxy. Ouaddou’s reported update stopped short of a diagnosis, while Kamogelo Sebelebele has been ruled out of the continental fixture. Appollis shouldn’t be treated as either a confirmed starter or a confirmed absentee.

Ouaddou has also acknowledged limited recent footage because African Stars’ domestic league hasn’t started. That information gap makes a large Pirates handicap difficult to justify, even with the visitors’ encouraging defensive record.

Betting Tip: Orlando Pirates draw no bet, over 90 minutes. Their current league performances support the visitors, with a refund if the leg finishes level. It suits a first-leg task that prioritises returning with the tie under control over chasing a big margin.

Red Arrows vs Kaizer Chiefs

Saturday, 17 October, 15:00 SAST. Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Ndola. Chiefs’ official travelling-squad announcement confirms the venue and local start, which is also 15:00 in South Africa.

Chiefs remain unbeaten after eight league games, but Tuesday’s 1–1 draw with Stellenbosch was their third successive league draw. Fourteen points leave them fourth. Their ability to avoid defeat is useful evidence; turning that into an away-win selection requires more.

Wandile Duba, Flavio Da Silva, Luke Baartman and Rushwin Dortley are in the 23-player travelling party. Lebohang Maboe and Siphesihle Ndlovu, both ruled out through injury before the Stellenbosch game, are absent. Inclusion in the travelling squad doesn’t confirm a starting place.

Fernando Da Cruz expects Red Arrows to threaten through transitions and long balls. With Chiefs’ midfield options reduced, protecting the space around Sibongiseni Mthethwa matters. Sending too many players forward could give the hosts precisely the openings Da Cruz has identified.

Betting Tip: Kaizer Chiefs or draw, over 90 minutes. Draw cover fits their recent results and the midfield disruption better than demanding an away victory. Keeping the contest manageable would give Amakhosi a platform for the return at Moses Mabhida.

Wiliete vs Mamelodi Sundowns

Sunday, 18 October, 17:00 SAST. Estádio Nacional da Tundavala, Lubango. Today’s Rádio Nacional de Angola report, featuring Wiliete vice-president Vitorino Vissele, gives a 16:00 Angolan start. That is an hour behind South Africa and updates the differing venue on Sundowns’ fixture page.

The defending African champions received a first-round bye. Wiliete earned this meeting by beating Foresters 5–0 on aggregate, with Angola striker Mabululu scoring three of those goals. That gives Sundowns a specific attacking threat to manage.

Sundowns arrive after their MTN8 triumph and Tuesday’s 4–1 win at Richards Bay. Iqraam Rayners scored twice, while Teboho Mokoena started and helped create Fawaaz Basadien’s goal. Mokoena’s midweek involvement is firmer evidence than carrying forward fitness doubts from before the final; Sunday’s selection remains unconfirmed.

Best Bet: Mamelodi Sundowns draw no bet, over 90 minutes. Their recent performances give them the strongest winning case of the three visitors. Wiliete’s scoring threat and the return leg make draw protection more appealing than adding a clean sheet or a heavy handicap.

The Betting Read

Away travel matters through preparation and recovery, rather than a blanket assumption that every African trip plays the same way. Chiefs left on Thursday after Tuesday’s league match; Pirates face a Namibian opponent in Botswana. The actual itinerary and venue deserve more weight than the away-team label alone.

We favour draw cover across these opening legs, with Sundowns offering the clearest winning argument. These are market preferences, not claims of value without verified prices. Our sports betting overview explains the options; compare the same market and settlement period before backing a selection. A first-leg draw can refund draw no bet or win double chance while leaving qualification undecided.
