Our Standards
Editorial Policy
How StraightBet selects, researches, reviews and corrects its information.
Last updated: 17 July 2026
StraightBet SA publishes sports betting and horse racing information for South African readers.
This Editorial Policy explains how we select, research, write, review, update and correct our content. It also explains how we protect our editorial decisions from commercial influence.
Our goal is not to make betting appear safer, easier or more profitable than it is. Our goal is to give readers clear, accurate and useful information so they can understand how betting products work, assess licensed operators and recognise the risks involved.
Our editorial principles
Every article published by StraightBet SA should follow five core principles.
Accuracy
Material claims must be supported by an appropriate source or clearly identified as opinion, interpretation or analysis.
We do not knowingly publish false, outdated or misleading information.
Independence
Affiliate relationships may influence which operators we are commercially able to feature, but they must not determine our factual conclusions or guarantee favourable coverage.
Operators cannot purchase positive opinions, suppress legitimate criticism or dictate our editorial verdicts.
Transparency
Readers should be able to understand:
- who owns StraightBet SA;
- who creates and reviews its content;
- when a page contains affiliate links;
- how betting sites are assessed;
- when information was published or updated; and
- how to report an error or concern.
Relevance
Our content is written primarily for South African readers.
We prioritise locally relevant information, including South African licensing, rand-based payments, local sports, horse racing, provincial regulation and responsible gambling support.
Responsibility
Betting always involves financial risk.
We do not present gambling as a reliable source of income, a solution to financial problems or a guaranteed way to make money.
Who creates our content?
Articles are published under the byline “StraightBet Editorial Team.”
This byline represents the collaborative research, writing, editing and maintenance process behind the website. It is not a fictional individual or fabricated expert identity.
StraightBet SA’s editorial process is overseen and managed by our Managing Editor. Content intended for publication is reviewed for accuracy, clarity, usefulness and consistency with this policy.
StraightBet SA is owned and operated by Stuart Jones, trading as StraightBet SA.
Further information about these roles is available on our Our Editorial Team page.
How we choose topics
We select topics based on factors such as:
- questions commonly asked by South African bettors;
- gaps in existing betting information;
- changes to betting products or markets;
- changes to operator terms, features or licensing;
- important sporting and horse racing events;
- reader safety and responsible gambling concerns;
- search demand where it reflects a genuine reader need; and
- the usefulness of the topic to our intended audience.
Search data may help us understand what readers want to know, but we do not create pages solely to manipulate search rankings or repeat information already available elsewhere without adding meaningful value.
Commercial potential may be considered when planning content, but it must not be the only reason a page exists.
Our research standards
Writers and editors should use the most authoritative and relevant sources reasonably available.
Depending on the subject, these may include:
- the National Gambling Board;
- South African provincial gambling authorities;
- verified licensing records;
- official bookmaker websites;
- operator terms and conditions;
- official promotional rules;
- recognised sporting bodies;
- official competition and racing information;
- government legislation and regulatory publications;
- reputable payment providers;
- responsible gambling organisations; and
- direct correspondence with an operator or relevant authority.
Primary sources are preferred wherever practical.
Competitor websites, social-media posts, search-result summaries and automated outputs should not be treated as sufficient proof of a material claim without further verification.
Where credible sources conflict, we assess their authority, publication date and relevance. Any genuine uncertainty should be disclosed rather than hidden behind confident language.
Licensing verification
StraightBet SA does not knowingly promote unlicensed or unlawful gambling operators.
Before publishing a bookmaker review or commercial link, we aim to confirm that the operator appears to hold an appropriate licence issued by a recognised South African provincial gambling authority.
Verification may include checking:
- the National Gambling Board’s Verified Operators Portal;
- the relevant provincial gambling authority;
- the operator’s published licence information; and
- supporting regulatory records where necessary.
A logo, licence claim or affiliate manager’s assurance is not treated as conclusive proof by itself.
Licensing information can change. We therefore encourage readers to verify an operator’s current regulatory status before registering, depositing or placing a bet.
If we discover that an operator may no longer be appropriately licensed, we may remove links, suspend recommendations, add a warning or unpublish the relevant content while the matter is investigated.
How we write betting guides
Betting guides should explain the topic in clear, practical language.
Writers must avoid:
- presenting speculation as fact;
- implying that a strategy guarantees success;
- suggesting that losses can reliably be recovered;
- describing betting as an investment;
- exaggerating the likelihood of winning;
- hiding important restrictions;
- using fabricated personal experiences;
- copying another publisher’s work; and
- adding unnecessary content purely to increase word count.
Examples may be used to explain odds, markets or calculations, but they should not be presented as live recommendations unless they have been independently assessed and clearly labelled.
Bookmaker reviews
Our bookmaker reviews are intended to help readers understand an operator’s strengths, limitations and suitability.
Depending on the operator and the information available, a review may consider:
- South African licensing;
- sports and horse racing coverage;
- available bet types;
- website and mobile usability;
- deposits and withdrawals;
- customer-support options;
- promotional terms;
- account restrictions;
- responsible gambling tools; and
- other features relevant to South African readers.
We do not claim to have personally tested an operator, deposited money, completed verification or withdrawn winnings unless that testing genuinely occurred.
Where a conclusion is based on published information rather than direct account testing, the article should not imply otherwise.
Our complete assessment framework is explained on our How We Review Betting Sites page.
Ratings, rankings and recommendations
A ranking is an editorial assessment—not an objective statement that one operator is perfect for every reader.
Ranking decisions may consider:
- licensing and regulatory standing;
- product quality;
- relevance to South African bettors;
- market coverage;
- payment convenience;
- transparency of terms;
- usability;
- customer support;
- player-protection features; and
- material disadvantages or restrictions.
Commercial arrangements may affect whether an affiliate link is available or whether an operator can be featured in a monetised placement. They must not override serious safety, licensing or accuracy concerns.
We will not rank an operator highly solely because it pays a larger commission.
The factors used on a specific comparison page may differ according to the subject of that page. Where appropriate, the page should explain the most important criteria behind its rankings.
Bonuses and promotions
Promotional offers can change or be withdrawn without notice.
When covering a bonus or promotion, we aim to check material conditions such as:
- eligibility;
- minimum deposits;
- minimum odds;
- qualifying bet requirements;
- wagering or turnover requirements;
- maximum rewards;
- payment-method exclusions;
- expiry periods;
- withdrawal restrictions; and
- geographical or account limitations.
A headline reward should not be presented without enough context for the reader to understand the most important restrictions.
We avoid describing an offer as “free” where the customer must deposit, wager or accept a material financial condition to receive it.
Readers should always check the latest terms on the operator’s website before claiming an offer.
Sports analysis and betting selections
Any prediction, selection or betting analysis published by StraightBet SA is an opinion based on the information available at the time.
No selection is guaranteed to win.
Relevant analysis may consider form, statistics, injuries, team news, historical performance, conditions, prices and other available information. However, unexpected events and changing odds can affect any outcome.
Past performance does not guarantee future results.
Where odds are mentioned, they may change after publication and should be treated as indicative unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Affiliate relationships
StraightBet SA may earn commission when a reader follows an affiliate link and completes a qualifying action.
Affiliate links do not increase the price paid by the reader unless clearly stated otherwise.
Commercial relationships do not entitle an operator to:
- approve an article before publication;
- demand a favourable rating;
- remove legitimate criticism;
- prevent a correction;
- alter responsible gambling messaging; or
- conceal important terms from readers.
Material commercial relationships should be disclosed clearly and in a location readers can reasonably notice.
Further details are provided in our Affiliate Disclosure.
Sponsored content
Any sponsored article, paid placement or other content supplied or funded by a third party must be identified clearly.
Sponsored content must still comply with our standards concerning:
- factual accuracy;
- legal operators;
- responsible gambling;
- age restrictions;
- misleading claims; and
- transparency.
Payment does not exempt content from editorial review.
StraightBet SA reserves the right to reject sponsored material that conflicts with this policy.
Conflicts of interest
Writers, editors and contributors should disclose any financial, professional or personal relationship that could materially affect their coverage.
Where a relevant conflict exists, StraightBet SA may:
- disclose it on the page;
- assign the content to another contributor;
- seek an additional review;
- limit the person’s involvement; or
- decline to publish the content.
Free products, event access or other benefits must not be portrayed as independent purchases or experiences.
Responsible gambling standards
StraightBet SA content is intended only for adults aged 18 or older.
We do not knowingly create content designed to appeal primarily to children or encourage underage gambling.
Our content must not:
- guarantee winnings;
- imply that gambling demonstrates personal success;
- encourage readers to chase losses;
- promote borrowing money to bet;
- suggest that gambling solves emotional or financial problems;
- shame people for choosing not to bet; or
- minimise the potential consequences of harmful gambling.
Relevant commercial and informational pages should include appropriate responsible gambling messaging.
Readers experiencing gambling-related harm should be directed to recognised South African support resources through our Responsible Gambling page.
Use of artificial intelligence and digital tools
StraightBet SA may use artificial intelligence and other digital tools to assist with tasks such as:
- topic research;
- content planning;
- outlining;
- language editing;
- summarisation;
- data organisation;
- formatting; and
- quality checks.
These tools do not replace human editorial accountability.
AI-generated output must not be treated as verified fact merely because it sounds convincing. Material claims must be reviewed against appropriate sources before publication.
We do not knowingly use AI to fabricate:
- authors;
- professional credentials;
- interviews;
- quotations;
- test results;
- operator experiences;
- sources; or
- personal betting activity.
The StraightBet Editorial Team remains responsible for the final content published on the website.
Originality and attribution
StraightBet SA aims to publish original work.
Writers and editors must not copy another publisher’s wording, structure, research or conclusions without appropriate permission or attribution.
Facts that originate from an external source should be represented accurately. Direct quotations must be attributed and used only where they add genuine value.
Images, graphics and other media must be owned by StraightBet SA, appropriately licensed, supplied with permission or otherwise used lawfully.
Updating existing content
Betting information changes frequently.
Pages may be reviewed when:
- an operator changes its terms;
- a promotion expires;
- licensing information changes;
- a payment method is added or removed;
- a law or regulation changes;
- a factual error is reported;
- an article becomes materially outdated; or
- a scheduled content review takes place.
An updated date should reflect a meaningful review or material change—not a cosmetic edit made only to make an article appear recent.
Older information may remain on the website where it still provides historical or contextual value, provided it is not presented misleadingly as current.
Corrections
Readers, operators, regulators and other interested parties may report suspected errors through our Contact Us page.
When a correction request is received, we may:
- review the disputed statement;
- check the original and any newly supplied sources;
- consult the writer or editor involved;
- contact the relevant operator or authority where appropriate; and
- correct, clarify, update or retain the content based on the evidence.
We will not remove accurate criticism solely because it is commercially inconvenient.
Material errors should be corrected promptly once confirmed. Minor spelling, grammar, formatting or style changes may be made without a correction notice.
Our full process is described in our Corrections Policy.
Reader and operator submissions
Information submitted by a reader, operator or commercial partner may help us investigate or update a page, but it is not automatically accepted as accurate.
We may request supporting documentation or seek independent confirmation before making a change.
Submitting information does not give the sender editorial control over the resulting content.
External links
StraightBet SA may link to operators, regulators, sporting bodies and other third-party websites.
We are not responsible for maintaining or controlling external websites. A link does not mean we endorse every statement, service or practice found on that site.
External terms, prices, promotions and policies may change after our content is published.
Enforcement of this policy
The Managing Editor oversees the application of this Editorial Policy.
Content that materially conflicts with this policy may be corrected, updated, suspended or removed.
Repeated or deliberate breaches by a contributor may result in the rejection of their work or the end of the working relationship.

Questions, correction requests or concerns about our editorial standards can be submitted through our Contact Us page.
Please identify the relevant page and provide enough detail for us to investigate the matter properly.
