Man United Crisis Deepens as Lisandro Martinez Slams Club Hierarchy After Atletico Defeat
Lisandro Martínez questioned Manchester United’s recruitment after a 2–0 Champions League defeat at Atlético Madrid extended their winless run to five matches. His comments have added to the pressure around Michael Carrick’s side before another demanding away fixture.

Manchester United’s problems have spilled into public view after Lisandro Martínez criticised the club’s hierarchy following Tuesday night’s Champions League defeat at Atlético Madrid.
The Argentina defender called for a stronger squad and greater support from above after United lost 2–0 in Spain on 13 October. Leny Yoro was sent off as Carrick’s team went a fifth consecutive match without a win across all competitions.
Martinez challenges recruitment at United
Martínez’s criticism centres on the strength of the squad, an issue that also matters when assessing United in soccer betting markets. His concerns will draw attention to the options available to Carrick as the fixtures continue.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, Martínez said United had expected more reinforcements following last season’s progress. He pointed towards the club’s football leadership and questioned whether the squad had been strengthened sufficiently for nights like this.
“I expect more from our technical director,” he said, in comments carried by Stats Perform.
Martínez also accepted that the players must improve. He acknowledged Atlético deserved their victory and argued that responsibility should extend beyond the coach and those on the pitch. He questioned the cycle of changing managers without addressing other parts of the club.
His remarks will intensify scrutiny of United’s recruitment decisions. They also leave Carrick preparing for the next game with a senior player’s concerns about squad strength now part of the public debate.
Atletico punish another difficult United night
Pablo Barrios put Atlético ahead inside the opening minute. United had chances to respond, but their task became harder when Yoro was dismissed following a VAR review after a challenge on Jonathan David.
Ademola Lookman made it 2–0 in the 79th minute, converting after Senne Lammens saved David’s attempt. United could not find a way back, leaving Madrid with another result that increases the pressure on their performances.
The club’s official match report confirms that Leeds United away on Sunday comes next, followed by a Champions League trip to Como.
That schedule gives United little time to turn the conversation back towards results. An improved display against Leeds would help, although the concerns Martínez raised about recruitment will take longer to answer.
The Betting Read
Our view is that United’s next match needs to be assessed on the available players, the opponent and the price. A five-game winless run warrants caution, but backing against United automatically can become expensive if the market has already adjusted sharply.
Assess the price before backing a response
A reaction after a poor defeat is possible, but frustration in a television interview does not establish that a turnaround is coming. Before backing United to win, look for a starting side capable of creating chances and controlling the spaces it leaves behind.
If considering an opponent’s double-chance market, remember that covering two outcomes generally means accepting a shorter price. Our sports betting guide explains decimal odds and implied probability, useful checks before deciding whether that protection is worth the cost.
Wait for team news before choosing goals markets
The Madrid defeat alone is a weak basis for selecting over or under goals in a different fixture. The early concession and second-half red card affected the way this game unfolded. Assess the next opponent’s attack and United’s confirmed defensive selection before drawing a conclusion.
Yoro’s dismissal also makes the confirmed disciplinary position important when United’s next European match approaches. Check availability for that specific competition rather than carrying assumptions from one fixture into another.
We are not recommending a priced selection at this stage. Confirmed line-ups and current South African bookmaker odds are needed before judging value. Readers comparing operators can consult our 10bet review alongside the match research.
