Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates both delivered convincing wins on Tuesday, 13 October, keeping the Betway Premiership title race tightly contested at the top. Sundowns won 4–1 away to Richards Bay, while Pirates beat TS Galaxy 3–0 at home.
Kaizer Chiefs lost further ground after a 1–1 draw with Stellenbosch, their third successive league draw. AmaZulu, meanwhile, beat Durban City 2–1 to reach 19 points and remain within touching distance of the leaders. The results leave Chiefs unbeaten, but nine points behind Sundowns.
Tuesday’s PSL results
Our PSL fixtures preview set out the four matches ahead of kick-off. The completed results now give us a clearer view of the form behind the table, particularly Pirates’ defensive record and the draws slowing Chiefs down.
| Home team | Score | Away team |
|---|---|---|
| Richards Bay | 1–4 | Mamelodi Sundowns |
| Orlando Pirates | 3–0 | TS Galaxy |
| Kaizer Chiefs | 1–1 | Stellenbosch |
| Durban City | 1–2 | AmaZulu |
Sundowns respond with four goals
Sundowns followed their MTN8 success with a seventh league victory, although Richards Bay briefly made the contest level at Princess Magogo Stadium. Tashreeq Matthews opened the scoring in the 18th minute before Lwandile Mabuya equalised four minutes later.
Iqraam Rayners restored Sundowns’ lead before half-time and scored again shortly after the restart. Fawaaz Basadien added the fourth in the 59th minute, turning a competitive opening into a comfortable result. The official PSL match reportrecords another productive night for the leaders’ attack.
Sundowns have now scored 23 goals in nine league games. That attacking output matters, but so does the opposition: Richards Bay remain winless with three points from eight matches. Four goals here are evidence of Sundowns’ finishing, rather than a reliable forecast for every upcoming fixture.
Pirates make it six straight league wins
Pirates responded to their MTN8 final disappointment with a commanding league performance at Orlando Amstel Arena. Boitumelo Radiopane put them ahead in the 18th minute, before half-time substitute Tshepang Moremi doubled the advantage early in the second half. Simphiwe Masilela completed the scoring in the 77th minute.
The PSL’s Pirates report confirms a sixth consecutive league victory. That distinction matters because their cup defeat interrupted their wider run of results, but has not broken their winning sequence in the Premiership.
Their defensive numbers are just as striking as the winning streak. Pirates have conceded only one goal in eight league matches, alongside 19 scored. Tuesday’s clean sheet strengthens that record and leaves them one point behind Sundowns, having played one match fewer.
Chiefs draw again as AmaZulu stay close
Chiefs had to recover from a goal down at FNB Stadium. Sinoxolo Kwayiba gave Stellenbosch the lead in the 48th minute, with Mduduzi Shabalala equalising ten minutes later. Chiefs showed a response, but could not turn it into the win they needed.
Three wins and five draws leave Chiefs on 14 points from eight matches. Remaining unbeaten is a positive, yet repeated draws carry a cost when the sides above them keep winning. They are eight points behind Pirates from the same number of games.
AmaZulu made a faster start at Chatsworth Stadium, scoring through Mondli Mbanjwa and Athini Maqokola before the break. Haashim Domingo’s second-half free-kick brought Durban City back into contention, but AmaZulu held on to spoil Eric Tinkler’s first match in charge of City.
That was AmaZulu’s sixth win in eight league games. Their 19 points leave them three behind Pirates and four behind Sundowns, with a game in hand on the leaders. The title-race conversation still has room for more than the two teams at the top.
How the leading group stands
The official Betway Premiership table shows the top four as follows on Wednesday morning, 14 October:
| Team | Played | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Mamelodi Sundowns | 9 | 23 |
| Orlando Pirates | 8 | 22 |
| AmaZulu | 8 | 19 |
| Kaizer Chiefs | 8 | 14 |
Pirates’ game in hand creates an opportunity to move ahead, but it is not three points already earned. AmaZulu have the same number of matches played as Pirates and Chiefs, making their position another useful measure of the chasing teams’ progress.
The Betting Read
Pirates’ defensive record gives substance to an assessment of their ability to win without conceding. A win-to-nil selection still needs both outcomes to land, however, and the next opponent’s attacking strength matters. Six successive league wins do not make the seventh automatic.
For Sundowns, the goals support their attacking credentials, but Tuesday’s score should be weighed against Richards Bay’s struggles. Chiefs present a different question: whether they can convert competitive performances into wins. Our PSL betting guide explains the match and goals markets that can express those different views.
In the outright market, points, matches played and the remaining schedule belong in the same assessment. AmaZulu’s start deserves attention alongside the bigger names. We have not verified current bookmaker prices for this update, so there is no confirmed odds movement or value claim to attach to these results.
Use our sports betting guide to compare like-for-like markets and check the terms before staking. The strongest conclusion from Tuesday is about performance: Sundowns kept scoring, Pirates kept winning and defending, while Chiefs’ draw habit widened their gap to the leaders.
