URC Weekend Wrap: Bulls and Stormers Surge as Scottish Sides Lead
The Bulls and Stormers changed the South African pecking order with emphatic derby wins, while Edinburgh and Glasgow set the pace after Round 3. We cover all eight URC results, the key performances and what the weekend means for the next betting assessment.

The Bulls and Stormers delivered the biggest South African statements in this URC weekend wrap, beating the Lions 57-15 and Sharks 39-22 respectively on Saturday, 10 October. Both winners climbed above their derby opponents, while Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors finished Round 3 as the competition’s only unbeaten sides.
Across the eight matches on 9-10 October, Leinster finally got their first league win, Scarlets produced a late comeback and Ulster recovered a huge deficit to draw with Munster. For South African punters, the local results put forward power and discipline firmly in focus before the competition switches to European rugby.
Bulls Turn the Jukskei Derby Into a Nine Try Rout
The Bulls’ 57-15 victory at Loftus Versfeld was the weekend’s biggest winning margin. Johan Ackermann’s side scored nine tries, including a Cameron Hanekom double, to end the Lions’ winning start. They led 31-10 at half-time and kept adding to the score after the interval.
The Lions briefly led 7-5, but Morne van den Berg’s yellow card made an already difficult contest harder. The hosts took control of the collisions and made their attacking pressure count. Canan Moodie, JF van Heerden, Cheswill Jooste and Sebastian de Klerk all scored in the second half as the Bulls finished 42 points clear.
That margin gives you a useful starting point when reviewing a handicap, but the selected line still decides whether a bet wins. Our URC betting guide explains the difference between backing a team to win and backing it to cover a points advantage.
Stormers Move Ahead of Sharks With Forward Power
The Stormers’ six-try win at DHL Stadium gave Cape Town its own emphatic derby result. Hacjivah Dayimani crossed twice, with the home scrum and maul providing a platform the Sharks struggled to contain. Our full Stormers vs Sharks report covers the scoring and the key disruptions in more detail.
The teams were level at 8-8 before the Stormers opened a 22-8 half-time lead. Matt Romao and Manu Tshituka’s yellow cards left the visitors temporarily down to 13 players, and the hosts secured their fourth try soon after the restart. The Sharks fought back to 34-22 before JJ Kotze’s maul try settled the contest.
The Stormers’ official match report records Dayimani’s second try from a scrum driven over the line. That is the performance detail to carry forward: the home forwards created scoring opportunities repeatedly, rather than depending on one isolated break.
The Bulls and Stormers each banked five league points. The Lions and Sharks came away with none, so the derbies changed the early standings as well as the local bragging rights. For the Sharks, keeping a full side on the field and stabilising the scrum will be central to rebuilding confidence.
The South African Picture After Round Three
The Bulls are now third and the Stormers fourth, both on 11 league points. The Sharks sit fifth on 10, with the Lions seventh on nine. All four South African sides have won two of their first three matches, making bonus points an important part of the early separation.
SA Rugby’s round-up of the derbies confirms the new order. The local winners have momentum, with home conditions, team selection and bench strength to consider before their next matches.
Edinburgh and Glasgow Set the Pace
Edinburgh took top spot on 14 points with a 29-12 bonus-point victory at Zebre Parma. They had to manage two yellow cards and waited until the final play to secure their fourth try through Tom Currie. Three wins from three give Sean Everitt’s side the strongest results record so far, with Zebre still seeking their first win.
Glasgow are second on 13 after beating Connacht 36-19 at Scotstoun on Friday. Gregor Hiddleston scored twice and the Warriors’ maul produced four of their five tries. Connacht narrowed the gap to seven points during the second half, but Glasgow restored control and denied the visitors a fourth try.
For the South African teams, those Scottish results deserve attention. Edinburgh have already beaten the Stormers this season, and the Lions’ next two URC games are away to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Their ability to defend forward pressure will receive another test on that trip.
Leinster Respond as the Other Derbies Deliver Drama
Leinster beat Cardiff 29-5 in Dublin to collect their first URC win after two defeats in South Africa. Jimmy O’Brien scored twice as the defending champions secured their try bonus point before half-time. Cardiff’s only try came through Mason Grady, and they left without a league point.
Ulster recovered from 26-5 down at half-time to draw 26-26 with Munster in Belfast. Both sides scored four tries and took three league points each. Munster had built a commanding position, but Ulster’s second-half response turned it into a draw rather than a second successive defeat at home.
Scarlets won their first league game of the campaign by edging Benetton 27-26. The hosts trailed 21-7 at the break before Blair Murray and Ellis Mee helped turn the contest. Sam Costelow’s 79th-minute penalty supplied the decisive points, while Benetton left with both try and losing bonus points.
Ospreys also got off the mark, beating Dragons 38-31 at Rodney Parade on Friday. Morgan Morris scored twice late in a derby that had the Dragons ahead 28-26. Elliot Dee’s two tries helped the hosts stay in contention, but they had to settle for two bonus points as Ospreys took all five.

European Rugby Comes Before the Next URC Round
The Champions Cup and Challenge Cup take over next weekend before the URC resumes on 23-24 October. The Sharks travel to Cardiff and the Lions visit Edinburgh on Friday, 23 October. On Saturday, the Bulls host Ulster and the Stormers welcome Scarlets.
The Lions then face Glasgow away on 30 October, giving their Scottish trip particular weight after the Loftus defeat. Before those league games, European selections, workloads and any confirmed injury updates will help show how closely the next teams resemble the sides that played this weekend.
The Betting Read
The South African derbies put the contest up front in focus. The Bulls and Stormers built their large margins through sustained pressure, aided by opposition yellow cards. Next time, assess whether their selected packs can repeat that advantage against different opponents.
The weekend also offered very different handicap stories. The Bulls won by 42 points, the Stormers by 17 and Scarlets by one, while Ulster and Munster finished level. Those margins are more useful than a simple list of winners when you are judging how a particular line fits a match.
For totals, the Bulls-Lions game produced 72 points and Stormers-Sharks 61. Leinster-Cardiff finished with 34. We would assess attacking opportunities, discipline and the next venue before expecting the same scoring pattern to repeat. Our rugby betting guide explains the main markets and what to compare.
