Betway SA20 Auction 2026: Every Buy, Price and Updated Season 5 Squad
The 2026 Betway SA20 Player Auction is complete, with 18-year-old Jason Rowles the biggest buy at R2.9 million. Here are all 19 auction signings and, more importantly, what every Season 5 squad looks like now — including the retained stars who never went under the hammer.

The biggest cheque of the 2026 Betway SA20 Player Auction did not go to Faf du Plessis, Trent Boult or Kieron Pollard. It went to 18-year-old South African prospect Jason Rowles, who Joburg Super Kings signed for R2.9 million after a bidding fight with MI Cape Town. Faf du Plessis followed at R2.7 million, while MI Cape Town paid R2.6 million for Wiaan Mulder. StraightBet’s sports betting guide covers how cricket markets fit into the wider South African betting landscape, but before anyone thinks about Season 5 outrights, the first job is simply knowing what the six squads actually look like.
That is where auction coverage can be frustrating. A list of new buys tells you who moved, but not who was retained, who was pre-signed or which established names are still at each franchise. So this article does both: every player sold on 7 October, followed by the updated squad for all six teams.
The official SA20 auction recap confirms that 19 auction slots were filled across Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals had already completed their business before the auction. Season 5 begins on 17 January 2027, when defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape host Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.
All 19 Betway SA20 Auction Buys and Prices
Rowles was the night’s top purchase, while three established international names — Shimron Hetmyer, Trent Boult and Kieron Pollard — each went for R1.5 million. The full list below is based on the SA20 auction results and the completed bidding record from the evening.

Jason Rowles Beats the Stars to Become the Biggest Buy
Rowles was the clearest surprise of the auction. The St David’s Marist Inanda matriculant and Schools SA20 graduate was already viewed as one of the standout Under-23 options, but a bidding contest between JSK and MI Cape Town pushed his price to R2.9 million — higher than every established international and Proteas name on the board.
For JSK, the move is interesting because it sits alongside a very different type of recruitment. They also brought back 42-year-old Faf du Plessis and added Kieron Pollard, Jason Holder having already been pre-signed. In one squad they now have some of the most experienced T20 players in the competition and one of South Africa’s most closely watched young prospects.
One Important Squad Note: JSK Still Have a Wildcard to Name
Five franchises now have 19 named players. Joburg Super Kings are the one exception. Before the auction, SA20’s official squad rules and auction briefing said JSK still had a separate wildcard slot available. Their six auction purchases fill the remaining places in the salary-capped 18-player squad, but no wildcard was announced with those buys. We have therefore listed the JSK wildcard as TBC rather than treating an unannounced player as part of the squad.
The retained and pre-signed names below are cross-checked against SA20’s official pre-auction Season 5 squad tracker, with the 7 October auction additions then added to each franchise.

Durban’s Super Giants
DSG did not raise a paddle because their 19-player squad was already complete. The top-order and finishing power is obvious: Aiden Markram, Jos Buttler, Devon Conway, Heinrich Klaasen, Liam Livingstone and Kane Williamson can all change a T20 game, while Sam Curran, Sunil Narine, Gerald Coetzee and Kwena Maphaka give them multiple ways to build an attack.

Joburg Super Kings
JSK were the biggest movers on auction night. Du Plessis returns, Pollard adds another elite T20 brain and finisher, and Rowles is the high-upside investment. Holder, Hosein, Vince and Muzarabani give the overseas group variety. The only unfinished piece is the separate wildcard slot.

MI Cape Town
MI Cape Town may have produced the most intimidating post-auction combination on paper. Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada and Trent Boult can lead the attack, while Nicholas Pooran, Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks and Shimron Hetmyer bring serious batting power. Mulder adds the all-round balance that can make a T20 XI easier to build.

Paarl Royals
Paarl sat out the auction because the squad was already done. David Miller and Joe Root headline the experience, while Lhuan-dre Pretorius gives them one of the league’s most exciting young batting options. Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Gudakesh Motie and Bjorn Fortuin also give the Royals a deep spin group.

Pretoria Capitals
The Capitals entered with the smallest purse among the four auction teams and still added Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma for a combined R700,000. Their batting options now include Phil Salt, Matthew Short, Dewald Brevis, Rassie, Bavuma, Sherfane Rutherford and Andre Russell — a very different mix of tempo and experience.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape
The defending champions made only two buys because the core was already intact. Nandre Burger and Craig Overton strengthen a pace group that already includes Marco Jansen, Anrich Nortje, Adam Milne and Lutho Sipamla. With Quinton de Kock, Matthew Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs and Mitchell Marsh in the batting group, continuity remains the main theme.

Which Teams Came Out of the Auction Strongest?
There is no honest way to crown an auction winner in October and pretend that settles a tournament starting in January. Player availability, injuries, international schedules, form and the balance of the final XI will matter more than a list of names. Still, the roster construction gives us a few early clues.
MI Cape Town look exceptionally deep in high-end T20 talent. Rabada, Boult and Rashid can attack different phases with the ball, while Pooran, Hetmyer, Jacks and Rickelton can all raise the scoring rate quickly. Mulder is important because he can help them avoid choosing between batting depth and an extra bowling option.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape have taken almost the opposite route: keep the championship core, then add two seamers rather than rebuild. That matters in a league where familiarity with roles and home conditions can be as valuable as headline recruitment. Durban’s Super Giants are another squad that looks loaded without having needed the auction at all.
JSK have arguably the most interesting mix. Du Plessis, Pollard, Holder and Vince provide enormous experience, while Rowles is a major bet on youth. Pretoria have added calm top-order options around a more explosive group, and Paarl’s combination of Miller, Root, Pretorius and multiple quality spinners gives them a clear identity.
The Betting Read
The most relevant betting impact of the auction will be on Season 5 outright markets, but this is exactly where name recognition can distort judgement. A squad packed with famous internationals can still be poor value if the bookmaker has already shortened the price aggressively.
T20 cricket also makes role balance unusually important. A team can own six excellent top-order batters and still struggle if the likely XI lacks death bowling, powerplay wickets or a reliable sixth bowling option. Venue matters too: Newlands, the Wanderers, Kingsmead, Centurion, Boland Park and St George’s Park do not all reward the same style of team.
As markets settle after the auction, compare prices rather than backing a squad simply because it won the headlines.StraightBet’s betting sites guide covers the locally licensed operators we have reviewed, while our broader sports guide explains why odds should be read as prices rather than promises.
What Happens Next Before SA20 Season 5?
The auction has settled the main roster-building phase, but the squads are not frozen in time. Injury replacements, availability changes and JSK’s outstanding wildcard can still alter the picture before the first ball is bowled. That is why these are best treated as the confirmed post-auction squads as of 8 October 2026.
The season begins on Sunday, 17 January 2027 with a repeat of last season’s final: Sunrisers Eastern Cape against Pretoria Capitals in Gqeberha. By then, the more useful questions will be who is actually available, how the franchises shape their first-choice XIs and whether the early outright prices properly reflect those teams.
