Orlando Pirates’ Unbeaten Start: Champions Make Early Statement in PSL Title Defence
Orlando Pirates have opened their 2026/27 Betway Premiership title defence unbeaten, winning six of their first seven league matches. Five straight victories and a tightening defence have put the Buccaneers firmly into the early championship conversation.

Orlando Pirates have wasted little time showing that last season’s Betway Premiership title was not the end of the story. The defending champions are unbeaten through their opening seven league matches, with six wins and one draw putting them on 19 points.
Their latest league result, a 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants on 20 September, extended their winning streak to five matches. With Mamelodi Sundowns on 20 points after eight games, Pirates sit only one point behind the leaders while holding a game in hand. It is still early in the season, but the champions have already put themselves in a strong position.
Five Straight League Wins Put Pirates on the Front Foot
For South African punters following the early title race, our sports betting hub covers the wider markets and betting basics around major local competitions. Pirates’ current league form gives those markets plenty of fresh context.
After opening the season with a 2-0 home win over Milford FC, Pirates dropped their only league points so far in a 1-1 draw away to AmaZulu. They have responded by winning every Premiership match since.
The run started with a 3-0 victory away to Chippa United, followed by a 2-0 home win over Sekhukhune United. Pirates then thrashed Kruger United 4-0 in Mbombela before beating Durban City 2-0 and Marumo Gallants 2-0.
The club’s official report on the Marumo Gallants win confirmed that the result made it five consecutive Betway Premiership victories and moved Pirates to within a point of Sundowns before the international break.
The Defence Has Become the Standout Number
Pirates’ scoring has been impressive, but the cleaner story is at the other end of the pitch. They have conceded only once in their first seven league matches, with that goal coming in the 1-1 draw against AmaZulu.
That means the Buccaneers have kept six clean sheets in seven Premiership games. Their current five-match winning streak has also come without conceding a single league goal.
The 4-0 win over Kruger United was the biggest victory of the run, but the back-to-back 2-0 wins over Durban City and Gallants showed another side to their start. Pirates did not need to dominate every minute. They stayed patient, protected their goal and took their chances when the matches opened up.

Ouaddou’s Side Are Handling More Than the League
The unbeaten Premiership start becomes more notable when Pirates’ wider schedule is considered. Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side have also been balancing domestic cup football and CAF Champions League qualifying during the opening weeks of the campaign.
Pirates progressed through the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after a 3-1 second-leg win over La Cure Waves, following a goalless first leg in Mauritius. The club confirmed their progression and a second preliminary-round meeting with Namibia’s African Stars.
That workload matters because title defences are rarely decided only by a club’s strongest starting XI. The challenge is maintaining league consistency while cup matches, travel and continental football compete for minutes and recovery time.
The Early Table Sets Up a Familiar Fight
Pirates’ 19 points from seven games leave them immediately behind Sundowns, who have 20 from eight. The small difference in games played is important: Pirates do not need to chase the leaders from a distance, and their game in hand gives them a route to move ahead if they keep winning.
That does not make the title race a two-team contest in September. There is too much football left for that. It does, however, mean the defending champions have avoided the kind of slow start that can turn a title defence into a catch-up exercise.

What Comes Next for Orlando Pirates?
The international break interrupts Pirates’ league momentum, but the schedule becomes busy again in October. They are due to continue their CAF Champions League qualifying campaign before returning to Betway Premiership action against TS Galaxy on 18 October.
A Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs is then scheduled for 31 October. By that stage, the table should give a clearer indication of whether Pirates’ fast start has developed into sustained title-defence form.
For now, the numbers are difficult to argue with: seven league games, six wins, one draw, six clean sheets and no defeats. Pirates have started the season like champions who intend to make their title difficult to take away.
The Betting Read
Pirates’ unbeaten record is the headline, but bettors should be careful not to treat every winning run as a reason to back the same market each week. Their results so far point to two different strengths: they have enough attacking quality to punish weaker opponents, while their defensive record has kept tighter matches under control.
That makes the confirmed team sheet particularly important once the schedule becomes crowded again. CAF Champions League travel and domestic cup commitments can change rotation, minutes and match tempo, so a price based only on the league table may miss useful context.
The clean-sheet trend is worth monitoring, as are win-to-nil, total-goals and second-half markets when the matchup supports them. But those are observations from the current run, not automatic bets. The next opponent and the price still decide whether a market offers value.
The bigger early-season takeaway is that Pirates have given themselves room to work. They are not chasing the title race from behind, and they have shown they can win in different ways. The next stretch, with continental football returning and a Soweto Derby approaching, should tell us more about how durable this unbeaten start really is.
Pirates Have Put Their Title Defence in Motion
Orlando Pirates waited 14 years to reclaim the league title in 2025/26. Their response has been to start the defence without a defeat and with one of the tightest defensive records in the competition.
Nothing is won in September, and Sundowns remain directly alongside them in the early race. Still, six wins from seven and five victories in a row give Pirates exactly what a defending champion wants at this stage: points on the board, confidence in the squad and no early ground to recover.
