Mamelodi Sundowns are the 2026 MTN8 champions after beating Orlando Pirates 2–0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 10 October. Pirates’ attempt to win the competition for a fifth successive season ended with an early setback, a missed penalty and a second goal deep into stoppage time.

Mokoena put Sundowns ahead in the 11th minute. Williams then denied Gamphani Lungu from the spot with the score still 1–0, before substitute Rayners converted a late penalty to settle the final. The trophy changes hands, but the narrow margin for much of the evening matters when assessing what comes next.

Sundowns Turn the Final in Their Favour

The central question in our MTN8 final preview was whether Pirates could extend their remarkable sequence. Sundowns answered it by scoring early and making the holders spend the rest of the match searching for a way back.

According to the PSL’s official match report, Mokoena finished from close range after a free-kick move. It gave Sundowns a lead they carried into half-time.

Pirates had started positively, but their early possession did not bring a goal. Sipho Chaine subsequently kept the deficit manageable, with the club’s own account crediting him with important saves from Brayan León and Nuno Santos.

There was also a disruption to Pirates’ plans before the interval. Kamogelo Sebelebele was carried off, and Oswin Appollis came on for the second half. Sebelebele’s availability is now a team-news detail to follow before Pirates return to league action.

Williams Makes the Crucial Save

Pirates had their clearest route back when Mokoena conceded a penalty for a foul on Yanela Mbuthuma just before the hour. Lungu took responsibility, but Williams went low to his left and kept the attempt out.

That left Pirates chasing an equaliser rather than playing the closing stages on level terms. A penalty award had created the chance to change the match; the save preserved Sundowns’ advantage.

The Pirates match report records further opportunities as they pushed forward, including a Williams save from Deon Hotto. There was still a contest to be won before Rayners made the scoreline more comfortable.

The second goal arrived from the penalty spot in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Rayners scored after Sundowns were awarded a penalty for a challenge on Siyanda Ndlovu, leaving Pirates without time to repair the damage.

The Betting Read

The final produced a Sundowns win inside normal time, two total goals and no Pirates goal. For readers reviewing the main full-match markets, those are the essential outcomes: Sundowns to win, under 2.5 goals and both teams to score “No”. Our PSL betting guide explains the market labels if you’re comparing your selection with the result.

The late goal mattered differently across those selections. It changed the correct score from 1–0 to 2–0 and took the match above 1.5 goals, while leaving under 2.5 intact. Both teams to score remained “No”. That is a useful distinction when a dramatic finish makes it feel as though every bet has changed.

Our reading for the next round is more measured than simply backing Sundowns again or opposing Pirates. A clean sheet supported by a penalty save does not tell you that the opposition created nothing. Equally, missing that penalty does not erase the work Sundowns did to get ahead and retain their lead.

There is also no reason to treat the eventual two-goal margin as the balance of the entire match. The second goal came with the contest almost over. Before choosing a handicap next time, weigh the opponent, starting team and available price alongside the result.

League Football Returns on Tuesday

The PSL schedule lists both clubs in action on Tuesday, 13 October, at 19:30. Sundowns visit Richards Bay at Princess Magogo Stadium, while Pirates host TS Galaxy at Orlando Amstel Arena.

That gives the finalists a short turnaround after Durban. For Sundowns, the next question is whether they can carry this performance into an away league match. Pirates need a response at home, with selection and recovery the immediate details to watch.
