Erling Haaland became the fastest player to reach 60 Champions League goals, but Manchester City suffered their first defeat under Enzo Maresca as Paris Saint-Germain won 4–2 at the Etihad on Wednesday, 14 October.

The reigning European champions led 3–0 at half-time through Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha. City responded with a Haaland double after the break, but Maghnes Akliouche’s fourth goal kept PSG beyond reach.

PSG take control with three first-half goals

The attacking threat discussed in our Man City vs PSG betting preview arrived early. Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute, then supplied the cross for Dembélé to head home in the 15th. Vitinha made it three in the 32nd minute.

Maresca made three changes at the interval, introducing Matheus Nunes, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye. The response was immediate enough to give City hope: Ndiaye crossed for Haaland to score in the 53rd minute.

Akliouche restored PSG’s three-goal advantage in the 62nd minute with a shot Donnarumma could not keep out. Haaland struck again in the 75th minute, but City’s late pressure brought no further reward. The official City match report records a late Donnarumma penalty save from Ferran Torres as PSG closed out the victory.

Haaland reaches 60 goals and passes Aguero

Haaland’s first goal was his 60th in the Champions League, reached in just 60 appearances. Reuters reported that he broke Lionel Messi’s previous record of 80 matches to reach that milestone. His second left him on 61 goals overall.

He also became City’s leading scorer in the competition proper. The first goal took him beyond Sergio Agüero’s 36, and the second lifted his City tally to 38 from 41 appearances. That comparison excludes Champions League qualifying rounds.

The individual achievement gave City a positive on a difficult night, although it could not repair the damage PSG had done before half-time.

Maresca points to lost balance and a better response

Maresca said the quick first-half goals had disrupted City’s balance and the distances between players. He was encouraged by the improvement after the interval and said the team could learn from its first defeat of the season.

The numbers support the distinction between the two halves. Opta’s match analysis recorded 27 City shots worth 2.57 expected goals, with 1.78 of that total generated after the break. Expected goals estimates chance quality; it does not change the result or mean City were entitled to a different one.

PSG leave with six points from two games. City remain on three, with their winning start stopped in their ninth competitive match under Maresca.

The Betting Read

Our pre-match City draw-no-bet lean lost. Both teams scored, but the main result call was wrong. The first-half gaps in City’s defence are the clearest issue to reassess before their next European game.

Separate team results from player performance

Haaland’s two goals came in a match City lost by two. That is a useful reminder for readers of our sports betting guide: a view on a striker’s chances and a view on his team winning are separate judgements. Player markets still need a price, a confirmed role and an assessment of the service he is likely to receive.

City need defensive improvement before the next European test

Our assessment is that City’s first-half defensive problems deserve more attention than an automatic expectation of a winning response. Their second-half chances show they retained an attacking threat, but conceding early forced them to chase the game.

For future soccer betting selections, reassess the opponent and starting XI rather than assuming either a comfortable City recovery or another high-scoring defeat. PSG’s next European opponent is Barcelona, a fresh test that also requires its own analysis.

Barcola hat-trick leads Liverpool to six at LASK

Liverpool won 6–3 away to LASK, with Bradley Barcola scoring his first goals for the club in a hat-trick. Ronald Araújo, Jeremie Frimpong and Lewis Koumas also scored as Andoni Iraola’s side made it two Champions League wins from two.

It was an emphatic attacking response to Sunday’s defeat by City, although conceding three leaves room for defensive scrutiny. Barcola’s breakthrough strengthens the discussion around Liverpool’s attacking options; one prolific night alone cannot establish how consistently they will convert chances against stronger opposition.

Other major Champions League results

Real Madrid won 4–3 at Roma after trailing 3–1, while Aston Villa beat Fenerbahçe 6–0 and Bodø/Glimt defeated Borussia Dortmund 1–0. UEFA’s official results also confirm wins for Feyenoord, Shakhtar Donetsk, Real Betis and Stuttgart.

City return to Premier League action at home to Ipswich Town on Saturday before hosting AEK Athens in the Champions League on Tuesday, 20 October. PSG face Barcelona that same European night, while Liverpool host Villarreal.
