Daryz Makes History with Back-to-Back Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Victory
Daryz has won the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for the second year running, sweeping past Bay City Roller at ParisLongchamp to become the first male horse since Alleged in 1977 and 1978 to complete the famous Arc double.

Daryz did exactly what the weight of expectation demanded on Sunday. The defending champion came from the rear of the field under Mickaël Barzalona, found daylight in the straight and produced the finishing burst that had made him the horse to beat before the race.
The four-year-old beat Bay City Roller by one and a quarter lengths, with Diamond Necklace a neck away in third. Friendly Soul finished fourth and Kalpana fifth. The winning time was 2:27.11 over the 2,400 metres at ParisLongchamp.
It was more than another Group 1 win. Daryz is now the first male horse in 48 years to win consecutive Arcs, joining one of the shortest and most prestigious lists in European racing.
Daryz Had to Win It the Hard Way
For South African racing fans who followed our pre-race coverage, the result is a useful reminder of why a big-race favourite still has to solve the race in front of him. Our horse racing betting guide explains how draw, pace and race position interact, and Sunday’s Arc was a clean example of all three.
Barzalona did not force Daryz forward from stall 5. He allowed him to settle towards the back while Bay City Roller, drawn much wider in stall 15, was sent forward by Oisin Murphy and managed to work across into a prominent position.
That left Daryz with ground to make up when the race entered the home straight. Barzalona switched him to the outside, where the favourite finally had room to accelerate. Diamond Necklace, who had started from the widest stall of all in 16, was still fighting for the places, but Daryz went past her and then closed rapidly on Bay City Roller.
The official France Galop race report records Daryz winning by one and a quarter lengths, with Bay City Roller second and Diamond Necklace third. It also confirms Friendly Soul and Kalpana completed the first five.

A Win That Puts Daryz in Rare Company
The historical comparison is what turns this result from a major win into an Arc landmark. Alleged was the last male horse to win the race in consecutive years, taking the 1977 and 1978 editions. Since then, the mares Trêve and Enable both managed back-to-back Arc victories, but no male runner had repeated the feat until Daryz.
The victory also extended the Aga Khan family’s record in the race to nine wins. Daryz supplied the eighth in 2025 and has now added the ninth, continuing a relationship with the Arc that stretches back to 1948.
Trainer Francis-Henri Graffard had entered Sunday under a very different kind of pressure from a year ago. Daryz was no longer a horse trying to win an Arc; he was the defending champion expected to do it again. Graffard described him afterwards as an “immense champion”, a fair summary of a horse who found a way to win despite being well off the pace turning for home.
Bay City Roller and Diamond Necklace Defied Their Draws
The beaten horses deserve attention too, especially because the pre-race conversation had focused heavily on the draw. Bay City Roller started from 15 and Diamond Necklace from 16, yet they finished second and third.
Murphy’s decision to go forward early allowed Bay City Roller to avoid being trapped wide for the entire race. Soumillon also managed to improve Diamond Necklace’s position gradually despite starting from the outside gate. Neither horse won, but both performances showed that a wide draw is a problem to manage rather than an automatic line through a runner.
The Betting Read
The most useful betting lesson from the 2026 Arc is not simply that the favourite won. It is that several of the strongest pre-race assumptions turned out to be only partly right.
Daryz’s stall 5 was viewed as a positive, and it certainly gave Barzalona options, but the horse still ended up towards the rear and had to come around runners in the straight. At the same time, the two horses with the most difficult-looking draws finished second and third. Anyone who treated the draw as a complete betting system would have missed much of what actually decided the race.
For future major meetings, pace and adaptability deserve as much attention as stall position. A horse drawn wide with enough early speed can find a position. A horse drawn low can still meet traffic. The market usually reacts quickly to obvious information such as the draw, so the better question is whether that information has been over- or under-priced.
That is also why comparing prices matters. StraightBet’s best betting sites in South Africa page covers locally licensed operators and the racing features we found during testing. Different books can react differently to the same race-day information, especially around international meetings.
What Happens Next for Daryz?
Daryz may have run his final race. Princess Zahra Aga Khan said after the Arc that, from a breeder’s point of view, she would rather see him safely home preparing for his future stallion career than return to racing next year. Aga Khan Studs racing manager Nemone Routh also indicated that retirement will be discussed this week.
Nothing should be treated as final until the connections make an official decision, but if this was Daryz’s last appearance, he has gone out at the very top: two consecutive Arcs, achieved 48 years after the last male horse managed the same feat.
