South Africa’s European rugby weekend begins on Saturday, 17 October, with four matches before the Cheetahs complete the programme on Sunday. The Bulls and Stormers offer the strongest home-win cases, while the Sharks’ travelling squad demands particular care before placing a bet.

Team news was checked on Friday morning, 16 October. The Bulls have announced their side, and the Stormers have published a selection subject to EPCR’s formal 14:00 announcement. Final match-day teams for the Lions, Sharks and Cheetahs remained unconfirmed at the time of writing.

Bulls vs Stade Français

Handré Pollard starts at flyhalf alongside Paul de Wet, with Luan Giliomee at fullback and Sango Xamlashe at outside centre. Elrigh Louw captains the side. Canan Moodie misses out with concussion, while Willie le Roux and Embrose Papier feature among the replacements, according to SuperSport’s team report.

Pollard’s tactical kicking and goal-kicking strengthen the Bulls’ case, while experienced replacements could help them sustain pressure at altitude. The changed combinations still need to settle, particularly in midfield and the back three.

Our lean is a Bulls win. The handicap requires more restraint: a large start asks them to dominate the scoreboard as well as the contest. Check Stade Français’ selection before backing a substantial Bulls minus handicap. A short match-winner price alone is no reason to add them to a multiple.

Stormers vs Bristol Bears

Evan Roos returns from a hamstring injury at No 8, replacing Hacjivah Dayimani, who is unavailable with concussion. The Stormers’ published selection also introduces a new starting front row of Vernon Matongo, JJ Kotzé and Sazi Sandi.

Cobus Reinach and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu remain the halfbacks, with Siya Kolisi in the loose trio and Damian Willemse at fullback. That continuity supports a Stormers win lean, although the scrum deserves attention after the front-row changes.

For betting, prefer assessing the match result before reaching for a wide handicap. Bristol’s 61–49 win at Loftus last season shows why South African home advantage cannot settle this contest by itself. That score also provides little basis for automatically backing the points over in Cape Town. Our rugby betting guide explains the difference between those markets.

La Rochelle vs Lions

The Lions begin their first Champions Cup campaign after a 57–15 defeat to the Bulls. Their touring party includes returning players Erich Cronjé, Bronson Mills and Etienne Oosthuizen, but prop Sebastian Lombard misses the trip with an ankle injury. Inclusion in the tour does not confirm a starting berth.

La Rochelle are our winner lean. The Lions must improve their defensive organisation and exits from their own territory before their attacking ambition becomes a convincing upset case.

The more useful handicap decision comes after both packs are named. If the Lions concede repeated penalties and lose field position early, a generous-looking points start can disappear quickly. Conversely, a disciplined opening could make an inflated live La Rochelle handicap less attractive. Avoid betting on a Lions response purely because last week’s defeat was heavy.

Lyon vs Sharks

The Sharks’ official tour update confirms mandatory rest for Springboks and lists Eben Etzebeth with a lower-limb injury awaiting further examination. Makazole Mapimpi has a hamstring injury, while Phepsi Buthelezi and Vusi Moyo have shoulder injuries.

There is still experience in the party, including Vincent Koch, Jason Jenkins and both Hendrikse brothers. These are touring selections, rather than a confirmed Lyon match-day team. Lyon enter Europe with three wins and three losses from six Top 14 matches.

Our early lean is Lyon to win, with the Sharks’ absences reducing the usefulness of their recent domestic results as a guide. For a handicap bet, first check the selected Sharks tight five and halfbacks. Their ability to hold possession and exit accurately will matter more than the reputation attached to the jersey. This is the clearest match in which to wait for final selections.

Bayonne vs Cheetahs

The Cheetahs’ announced touring squad includes Faf de Klerk, Jaco van der Walt, Carl Wegner and Louis van der Westhuizen. None should be presented as a confirmed starter before the match-day announcement.

Bayonne are our home-win lean. The Cheetahs’ task is to keep their defensive shape and protect possession against Top 14 opposition away from home.

The handicap offers a more demanding decision than naming the likely winner. Check how much experience Bayonne select and whether the Cheetahs have their established decision-makers available. With the match on Sunday, there is time to assess the final teams. Our current position is Bayonne to win, with no early handicap or total-points selection.

The Betting Read

Our winner leans are Bulls, Stormers, La Rochelle, Lyon and Bayonne. The available price still determines whether any of those selections represents value.

The strongest early South African cases are the two home sides; the biggest selection warning concerns the Sharks. Judge each match separately before combining favourites. Five individually plausible outcomes can still produce a losing accumulator.

Final opposing line-ups, the venue forecast and the actual handicap should decide whether a lean becomes a bet. Check whether the draw is a separate outcome or your stake is returned on a draw, and use our sports betting guidefor odds and returns. No live bookmaker prices are quoted here.
