Dricus du Plessis has been drawn into another middleweight contender’s plans, with Christian Leroy Duncan eyeing a potential showdown if he gets past Brendan Allen at UFC Vegas 122. A fight between Duncan and the South African has not been announced, but the suggestion adds a local reason to follow this weekend’s main event.
Why This Fight Matters for Dricus
The immediate interest is who emerges with a stronger claim to face an established contender. If you’re following the action through the markets, our MMA betting guide explains the difference between backing a winner and choosing a method or round.
In an interview with MMA Fighting published on 8 October, Duncan identified Du Plessis as a possible next step if an immediate championship opportunity doesn’t materialise. He also discussed the appeal of a London headliner in early 2027. Those are his ambitions, rather than a confirmed UFC booking.
“I’m ready for whatever comes, but that’s where my sights are set,” Duncan said in the original interview.
For Dricus, the significance is straightforward: an emerging contender is treating him as a major step towards the belt. That keeps his name relevant even on a weekend when he isn’t fighting. It doesn’t establish who he will face next, or where the winner would stand in the title queue.
Du Plessis Already Has His Comeback Win
Du Plessis beat Kamaru Usman by unanimous decision in Oklahoma City on 18 July. The UFC’s official results record scores of 50-45, 49-46 and 49-46, a successful return following his title loss to Khamzat Chimaev.
Duncan won on the same card, beating Jared Cannonier by unanimous decision to extend his winning streak to five. Their shared appearance gives this possible matchup a neat connection: both left Oklahoma City with wins, but with different reasons to look upwards.
Dricus has already reached the top of the division. Duncan is trying to prove that his run can carry him into that company. A meeting would bring those two ambitions together, although neither fighter’s preferred route obliges the UFC to make it happen.
Allen Comes Before Any Dricus Showdown
Duncan still has a substantial job in front of him. The UFC’s account of his recent progress highlights decision wins over Roman Dolidze and Cannonier, including the difficult grappling positions he had to escape against Dolidze. His next performance matters more than any proposed opponent afterwards.
Our reading is that Allen–Duncan should be watched for the questions it answers. Can Duncan keep enough of the action at striking distance? If he is taken down, can he return to his feet without giving away long stretches? And can he keep making good decisions as the fight wears on?
A convincing win would give substance to his interest in Dricus. A narrow victory could still move him forward, while leaving more questions about the matchup. A defeat would weaken the immediate case. None of those outcomes automatically determines Du Plessis’s next booking.
The Betting Read
There is no verified Du Plessis–Duncan price to quote here. Until a bout is announced and a bookmaker publishes a market, naming a favourite or claiming the odds have moved would run ahead of the evidence.
For this weekend, separate your view of Duncan’s potential from your view of the Allen matchup. A fighter can look capable of reaching a title fight and still face an awkward assignment on the way there. The result, the manner of the performance and the price all answer different questions.
If Duncan wins quickly, look beyond the finishing highlight before judging a possible Dricus fight. An early stoppage would demonstrate danger, but it might tell us little about sustained grappling exchanges or late-round stamina. A longer contest could provide more evidence on those points without producing such a dramatic clip.

When Is Allen vs Duncan in South Africa?
The UFC’s official weigh-in report lists Allen at 186lb and Duncan at 185lb, with both making weight. The event takes place at Meta APEX in Las Vegas on Saturday, 10 October, with the main-card action falling on Sunday morning in South Africa.
The published schedule converts to 23:00 SAST on Saturday for the prelims and 02:00 SAST on Sunday, 11 October, for the main card. Allen–Duncan comes later on that main card; 02:00 is not its guaranteed walkout time.

For Dricus supporters, the next development to watch is the result and what follows it. Duncan has put his interest on record. Now he needs the performance that makes the proposed showdown harder to ignore.
