Egypt vs Bafana Bafana: Mosimane to Rotate for Cairo Friendly
Bafana Bafana take two AFCON qualifying wins into Sunday’s friendly against Egypt, but Pitso Mosimane plans to give more of his squad a chance. Midfield injuries and a changed line-up make this Cairo test harder to read than the recent scorelines suggest.

South Africa face Egypt at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, 4 October 2026, with kick-off at 20:00 South African time. The fixture is an international friendly: no 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying points are at stake.
Mosimane’s side beat Guinea 2-1 and Eritrea 5-0 in their first two qualifiers. Egypt arrive after a 5-0 win over South Sudan. Those results make this a compelling match, but the coach’s plans for a reshuffled Bafana side are the bigger pre-match story.
Why Mosimane is changing his Bafana side
When Mosimane returned to the Bafana job, the first window offered two competitive tests and this one friendly. He used the qualifiers to get points on the board; now he has a chance to assess players who have spent much of the camp watching from the bench.
In SAFA’s update on the Egypt friendly, Mosimane said he intended to give the wider group playing time across the three-match camp. SAFA expects substantial changes and identified Sipho Chaine and Ricardo Goss among the goalkeepers who could feature, alongside players such as Shandre Campbell, Puso Dithejane, Tashreeq Matthews and Cassius Mailula. That is a guide to his plans, not a confirmed starting XI.
Midfield injuries narrow the choices
Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas will miss the friendly through injury, according to SAFA. Mokoena was already unavailable against Eritrea; Aubaas started that match but went off early. Their absences leave Mosimane with an especially important midfield decision if he also wants to rotate elsewhere.
Watch who starts beside Sphephelo Sithole and whether Brooklyn Poggenpoel gets another opportunity after replacing Aubaas against Eritrea. The exact pairing matters for Bafana’s ability to keep the ball and protect the defence, especially if several less familiar combinations appear together.
The two 5-0 wins need context
Bafana’s victory over Eritrea brought a first international goal and a second on the night for Relebohile Mofokeng. Sithole, Iqraam Rayners and Luther Singh also scored. It completed a six-point start after the Guinea win, and CAF’s Eritrea match report confirms South Africa remained in Cairo for the friendly.
Egypt also scored five in their latest qualifier, against South Sudan. Omar Marmoush scored twice in that game, according to CAF’s results report. Both attacks have fresh confidence, but neither five-goal margin tells us how Sunday’s different selections will function against a stronger opponent.
The friendly also gives Mosimane a different kind of evidence: how players handle Egypt’s pressing and movement, how quickly new combinations settle and whether the side can keep its shape after substitutions. A good performance may matter to November’s qualifiers even if the result itself brings no points.
The Betting Read
Rotation creates uncertainty in the 1X2 market and the goals line. If Chaine or Goss starts and Mosimane changes the midfield and forward unit, Bafana’s recent scoring rate is a weak shortcut to Sunday’s total. Egypt’s South Sudan result needs the same caution.
Our soccer betting guide explains the 1X2, double-chance and total-goals markets. For a pre-match selection, compare like-for-like prices only after the teams are confirmed, then check whether the market settles over 90 minutes and stoppage time. Our broader sports betting guide covers the basic bet-slip and odds checks if you need a refresher.
There is no published line-up here and no honest basis for a confident score prediction. The sharper question is whether the price available on matchday reflects the actual players on the pitch, rather than the players who produced the two qualifying wins.
Sunday is a useful test of Bafana’s depth in a demanding venue. It may tell Mosimane more about his options for the next competitive window than a familiar starting XI could.
